NICU Quality & Safety Nurse – Patient Safety

About the Job:

The NICU Quality & Safety Nurse will lead patient safety and quality of care efforts while striving to create and maintain a culture of safety within the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Utilizing the principles of process improvement and change management, the NICU Quality & Safety Nurse will partner with department leaders to facilitate the implementation of evidence-based and regulatory standards of nursing and clinical practice, leading various large and small-scale quality improvement and health system projects with end-to-end ownership.

What You’ll Do:

  • Facilitate and organize the NICU team to ensure the highest level of care is delivered to patients and families within the NICU.
    • Responsible for supporting the department and the organization in attainment of goals including improvement of quality outcomes for all patients, creation of efficient systems of care, and delivering an exceptional patient experience.
    • Continuously improve quality by monitoring Policy Manager and ensuring content is up to date.
    • Serve as patient safety clinical consultant to committees. Provide data analysis, trending and review of events or indicators, to support monitoring and improving patient safety and care when applicable.
    • Support clinical workgroups and quality improvement teams utilizing evidence-based practice.
    • Provide support to staff and serve as an internal resource for questions related to patient safety and quality.

  • Conduct investigations and root cause analyses and develop corrective action plans to improve the overall quality and safety of patient care. Collaborate with risk management to determine reporting requirements to regulatory agencies.
    • Track occurrences and other indicators appropriately in EZ-Track. Complete these tasks in a timely manner.
    • Provide clinical guidance to data analysts.
    • Maintain up to date knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards.
    • Work closely with the analytic team to prepare and present reports to the appropriate work teams and committees.

  • Serve as an innovative leader, role model, researcher, and change agent.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert on the regulatory, risk management, process improvement and patient safety requirements related to clinical nursing care as processes are improved or changed.
    • Support Culture of Safety initiatives.
    • Facilitate team building and problem solving when identifies changes are needed.

Who You Are:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a BSN required. MSN or Master’s degree in Healthcare or closely related field required within two (2) years of hire.
  • License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Hampshire required. Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience as an RN is required, with a special emphasis on Newborn Intensive Care nursing preferred. An additional two (2) years of experience in risk/or quality management and performance improvement activities preferred.
  • Current knowledge of regulatory standards related to patient safety, regulatory survey, DNV and process improvement techniques.
  • Project management skills required.
  • Ability to communicate with staff at all levels and facilitate multi-disciplinary project teams; Ability to work independently and take initiative; Ability to search for, interpret and utilize evidence; Ability to model skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision making, meaningful recognition, and authentic leadership, as described in "Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments," ACCN, 2005.
