Who We Are:
The Intensive Care Unit is a 16-bed unit with an average census of 12 patients. We are comprised of roughly 50 employees with Nurse-to-Patient Ratios of 1:2 (1:1 for CRRT and balloon pump care) with 2 LNA on days and 1 LNA on nights. The typical patient population consists of adults 17 & older with the following conditions: trauma, respiratory, surgical, neuro, sepsis, ARDS, and pulmonary.
About the Job:
Under the supervision of an RN, the Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical duties on patient units, including filing, transcribing, charting, sorting patient information, acting as receptionist, receiving and directing visitors, and answering the phone, etc.
What You’ll Do:
- Contributes to ensuring effective and efficient communication with visitors, callers, physicians, staff from other departments and others as appropriate.
- Meets and greets visitors to the department; determines the purpose of visit and responds or refers to appropriate staff member.
- Updates and maintains patient assignment board, Census Change Sheets, and all other patient lists.
- Supports effective and efficient patient care processes through timely, accurate transcription and entry of orders/data.
- Maintains Unit Secretary task list to ensure patient care which are verified by the registered nurse, to appropriate patient care documents.
- Assembles patient charts for all admissions to the unit to include all appropriate documents
- Prepares patient charts for patient transfers by copying and organizing required documents according to specific payer criteria.
- Disassembles and reorganizes charts upon discharge before forwarding to medical records.
- Coordinates completion of patient death certificates by contacting appropriate parties.
- Supports the smooth functioning of the unit by performing a variety of clerical and coordinating activities as designated by the unit.
- Updates and maintains the daily communication device list for the unit; ensures that all RNs receive communication device at the beginning of the shift and return them at the end of the shift.
Who You Are:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) certification preferred.
- Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Essential functions include activities in which incumbent must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to patients, physicians, families and other employees accurately, loudly or quickly.
- Ability to perform repetitive or routine duties working from detailed instructions and under standard procedures. Requires the making of minor decisions.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Strong organizational skills
- Software/Hardware: MS Office
