About the Job:
The surgical technologist in the first scrub role handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
What You’ll Do:
Preoperative Duties:
- Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
- Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gowns and gloves.
- Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
- Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator.
- Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.
- Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
- Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
- Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
Intraoperative Duties:
- Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies or usage during the procedure.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
- Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
- Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
- Sponges or suctions the operative site.
- Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders held by surgeon.
- Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
- Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
- Recognizing early warning signs and responding appropriately when a situation begins to deteriorate.
- Performs additional counts as necessary.
- Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
- Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
- Submits, documents, and transports (as needed) specimen(s), ensuring patient label is accurate with the correct patient, medical record number and date of birth.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Assist other members of the team with terminal cleaning of the room.
- Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient.
- Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
Other surgical cases or surgical equipment that may be used:
- Performing a cystoscopy
- Assemble / disassemble scope
- White balancing camera o Connect fluid tubing to scope
- Emergency hysterectomy
- Postpartum hemorrhage management
- Dilation and curettage
- Dilation and evacuation
- Cerclage
- Vaginal laceration repairs
- Postpartum salpingectomies
Other duties performed as needed/requested when not scrubbed into a case:
- Maintains operating rooms in a safe and efficient manner ensuring constant readiness for use.
- Assists in the transfers of patients to another unit/department via bed, wheelchair or other assistive modality as requested.
- Participates in admitting patient in the electronic medical record, bringing patient to the room and orients patient to surroundings.
- Maintains and cleans equipment as well as instrumentation ensuring that it is in working condition.
- Maintains the orderliness of work area, keeping hallways clear of excess equipment.
- Sets up Delivery Tables using sterile technique.
- Cleans and removes instruments, assists in breaking down Delivery table and placing specimens in appropriate locations.
- Maintains established par levels of patient care supplies in patient rooms and medication rooms.
- Ensures completion of daily task list.
Who You Are:
- Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist Program
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification
- Associate’s degree preferred
- Medical Technician License from the State of New Hampshire unless other current NH state license is held.
- BLS Certification
- Knowledge of medical terminology
